Students begin by defining the problem and researching it. They then identify requirements that must be met. Then they brainstorm and look at how others have solved the same problem.

After they have made a list, they select the best solution to create a prototype. This step allows students to see that they have made a lot of progress and can see their solution become a reality.

After building their prototypes, students test them to see if the work as expected. The prototypes can be used to improve their designs.

Most likely, they will have to make many prototypes before their design is complete and works. This iterative procedure teaches the designers to always improve their designs. They can’t be satisfied until they’ve done everything possible to create the best design.
